Frequently Asked Questions
First off, welcome! You’ll need to either buy a day pass or a membership to climb. Your first visit will include an orientation to explain the gym rules and how all the safety equipment works. After the orientation, you are free to climb any walls that are available on that day.
If you’d prefer to have an instructor present the entire time, we’d recommend either our Get into Climbing lesson or a Guided Climb where our staff will take care of all the safety stuff and you can just focus on the fun!
Everyone in the facility will need a signed waiver, even if they are just watching. Minors under 18 must also have their waiver filled out and signed by a parent or court-appointed guardian. Waivers can be filled out in advance at this link. Those under 18 must have their waiver filled out and signed by a parent or court-appointed guardian.
Junction memberships do not include J2 access by default. You will need to purchase a discounted Day Pass, a 10 or 30 Punch Pass, or upgrade your membership to include dual gym access. Please read our Dual Membership FAQ for more details.
We have about 100 routes and 55 boulder problems, with plenty of options for climbers of all abilities and backgrounds. Most of our route climbs can be done by top rope or lead (some walls are Auto Belay only), with our cave section being lead-only. Our boulder section follows a circuit-based system for difficulty levels, with more information being found in the "Boulder Circuits" section of the FAQ.
Every climber must receive an orientation and gym tour on their first visit, regardless of prior experience. If your last visit to Junction was over 8 months ago, a refresher may be necessary.
Belay tests are free. Top rope tests can be done without a booking; just let the staff know when you arrive, and we will give you a time estimate. We appreciate advance notice for lead tests; please call ahead and speak with a manager to check tester availability. Lead climbers must provide their own climbing rope (minimum length of 40m), and must use an active camming belay device such as a Petzl GRIGRI. Tube style devices, such as the Black Diamond ATC, are not permitted at Junction.
Children are welcome to climb, though we recommend they be at least five years of age, as we are not designed for younger children. Our minimum weight requirement for roped walls is 30 lbs (14kg).
We require active supervision for kids aged 12 and under - staff are not available to watch your children unless a Guided Climb session is booked in advance. Supervisors must be aged 16 or older. We recommend one supervising adult for every three children. If you’d prefer not to supervise, contact us to book a Guided Climb session and we can schedule a dedicated instructor to be with your group. Guided Climb bookings require at least one week's notice, but you may call and see if there is someone available with less notice.
Minors under 18 must also have their waiver filled out and signed by a parent or court-appointed guardian. You cannot sign a waiver for a child that is not yours - no exceptions!
Participants without a valid waiver will not be able to enter the climbing area, even if they are just watching. Waivers can be filled out online at this link.
There are no age restrictions for rock climbing at Junction. We have seen ages as young as 3 all the way to adults well into their 80s, but we recommend kids be 5 or older. Climbers must also be a minimum of 30 lbs (14 kg) and a maximum of 300 lbs (135 kg) to use our Auto Belays. Everything else is dependent on the climber's attitude and abilities.
Regardless of age, everyone entering the climbing area must complete a waiver, even if they are not climbing. Minors under 18 must also have their waiver filled out and signed by a parent or court-appointed guardian.
If you don’t have your own gear, we have gear to rent or purchase. Rock climbing shoes are required for all climbers. We don't allow climbing barefoot or running/street shoes of any kind. For safety and hygiene reasons, equipment cannot be shared between climbers.
Wear comfortable clothing, ideally athletic wear. Skirts and dresses are not permitted. Tops must be worn by all climbers. You will need to empty your pockets and take off any rings or jewelry before climbing.
You certainly can! Our pro shop is stocked with harnesses, shoes, chalk, chalk bags, and other accessories from great brands. We also carry our own line of signature clothing. If you're a Junction EFT member, you get 10% off eligible pro shop items. If you are a new climber, we recommend you check out our Beginner Package.
Please do not purchase safety equipment (harnesses, carabiners, belaying devices, etc.) second-hand, including Facebook Marketplace or from Amazon. Soft materials have an expiry of 10 years and must be certified by UIAA, and these safety measures cannot be guaranteed when buying second-hand or from Amazon. Please consider buying at our pro shop, MEC, or other specialized climbing retailers.
For more information, please call the gym at (519) 438-1717 or speak to a front desk staff member in person. The Junction reserves the right to deny the use of equipment it determines to be unsafe or otherwise innappropriate for indoor climbing.
Junction’s boulder circuit system is made up of eight circuits, indicated by tape colour on start and finish holds. A circuit purposefully contains climbs in a wide variety of styles, hold types and terrain. Each problem is intentionally designed to provide a specific challenge within the overall offering of its circuit. As a result, trying a whole circuit offers a diverse and unique climbing experience.
Each circuit is limited to a difficulty range, reflected by the width of the coloured bar on the circuit chart. Circuits will contain problems at every difficulty level within their range. Where each problem falls within its circuit is not labelled. There is a significant overlap in difficulty between adjacent circuits. For example, there will always be some white tape climbs that are more difficult than some purple tape climbs.
Visit our Boulder Circuits page for a full description.
All our roped climbs are marked with a difficulty grade using the Yosemite Decimal System, which is standard across North America. The easiest climbs start at 5.4 and get harder as the numbers go up.
Starting at 5.9, you may also see a "+" or "–" (e.g. 5.9+ or 5.9–) to show slight differences in difficulty within that grade — with "+" being a bit harder and "–" a bit easier. If there's no symbol, the climb is roughly in the middle of the grade.
Absolutely not - no one is ever forced to climb to the top. We understand everyone has different levels of ability and comfort, so you are welcome to come down at any time if you feel uneasy, anxious, or unable to complete the climb.
We strive to accommodate all climbers. If you have questions about whether climbing can be accessible to you, please contact us to discuss your options. Junction is proud also to host Rise Above Adaptive Climbing (RAAC), a non-profit organization run by rock climbers with disabilities, who run regular events for climbers of all ages and abilities. We recommend you reach out to them for more information about how they provide climbing to persons with disabilities.

Junction offers the following types of memberships:
EFT Membership: Membership payments are automatically processed through your credit card, allowing you to stop worrying about your membership expiring. This membership is perfect for those who want to commit to 4 or more months. A start-up fee of $28.00/card is required for new memberships.
30-day Prepaid Membership: These memberships are for those who do not want to commit long-term, unlike EFT memberships. After 30 days of unlimited climbing, your membership expires until you choose to renew.
Annual Prepaid Membership: 365 days of pure climbing! After this membership expires, you can choose when to renew.
Punch Passes: Punch passes offer a cost-effective option for those who want to climb occasionally but may not want to or cannot invest in a full membership. By purchasing passes up-front you get a better rate than buying individual day passes. Punches can be purchased in 10- or 30-punch packs.
Whether you're looking for single-gym or dual-gym membership for Junction, you can buy your membership online here. Single-gym memberships need to be purchased at the facility at which you will be a member. J2 Bouldering memberships can be purchased online here.
Rentals are not included in a membership. Unlimited Rentals can be purchased as an add-on.
Prepaid memberships can be upgraded to dual-gym memberships for a fee. Please note that prepaid memberships with dual-gym access will lose access to both gyms at the end of their original prepaid end date. EFT memberships can be upgraded at any point, with the dual-gym access and monthly fees changing on the next billing date.
30-day Prepaid Memberships and Annual Prepaid Memberships cannot be frozen or paused. EFT memberships can be frozen for a monthly fee, and members must do so through the online membership change request form. Freezing fees can be found in your membership terms and conditions.
Members get various benefits depending on their membership type. Visit our membership page to see member benefits.
EFT Memberships and Annual Prepaid Memberships get one guest pass per calendar month. The guest can be a first-time visitor or someone who has been to Junction before. Unused passes do not carry over to the next month. Dual memberships still only receive one guest pass, which can be used at either Junction or J2.
When a punch pass is purchased, the purchaser may add additional members to their punch pass pool. Each member in the punch pass pool, 13 years old and older, can share punches with a guest upon visiting the facility.
Feel free to send us an email or call us during our operating hours at (519) 438-1717 and we'd be happy to answer your questions!
Dual-gym memberships can be purchased through either gym, in person or online. When purchasing online, you can add on a dual-gym membership at the time of initial purchase. If you don’t add on dual-gym access during your initial purchase, you can always add it on during your membership.
Prepaid memberships can be upgraded to dual-gym memberships for an additional cost. Please note that prepaid memberships with dual-gym access will lose access to both gyms at the end of their original prepaid end date.
EFT memberships can be upgraded for immediate dual-gym access at any point for $22.50, with monthly fees changing for the next billing date.
EFT members can downgrade to a single-gym membership by completing the online membership change request form. On this form, members can request to remove their dual-gym access or make other changes, such as freezing or terminating their membership. Gym staff cannot process these requests in person or over the phone.
30-day prepaid memberships automatically expire. Once your membership expires, you can choose to renew with a single-gym membership.
Unfortunately, punch passes can only be used at the gym where you purchased them. You can transfer your punch passes for an additional fee, but we recommend you pay for a discounted Day Pass at the other gym.
You can pay an additional $2.00 to use a punch at the other gym.
Unfortunately, no, however, you can instead get Day Passes at your non-punch pass gym for a special rate of $17.50 per visit. To get this rate, you must have punches for the other gym remaining on your account.
Absolutely, but our system will only let you scan in at your home gym (i.e. the one you have a membership at). To use the punch pass at your non-home gym, you'll need to check in with staff at the front desk.

Junction offers two youth program streams: Recreation and Development.
Recreation is for kids who just love to climb. Instructors belay and give pointers, keeping the focus on time on the wall and having fun.
Development is geared toward kids who want to build their skills. These classes focus on technique and progression, with less emphasis on free climbing. Kids are encouraged to challenge themselves and take initiative as they grow.
Recreation and Development are two different streams, based on what your child wants out of their climbing experience.
Some kids stick with Recreation for years because they enjoy the freedom to climb and hang out with friends.
The best thing to do is talk to your child — they're the one in the harness, after all! For more on the differences between the streams, see the previous FAQ question.
All new participants in the Development Program start in Level 1, regardless of previous climbing experience. Our levels are based on skill and age, and instructors will assess each child to ensure they’re in the best fit. If they feel your child would benefit from a different level, we may suggest a move up or down. This could involve a change in class day, and we’ll always contact you first before making any adjustments.
Recreation is the best next step after a one-time session, as it emphasizes climbing and having fun. Development, on the other hand, is more structured and focused on building skills.
We totally understand that scheduling can be tricky! Since our Development levels are age- and skill-based, we’re not able to place climbers in a different level just to accommodate availability. The schedule changes each session depending on instructor availability, so we encourage you to check back next time.
In the meantime, you might consider registering for a Recreation class — they usually have more flexible timeslots.
We recommend reaching out to our youth programs coordinator, Alana, with specific questions.
You can also visit the designated page for the program that you want more information about.
